| These are a few highlights of the role-playing basics that I look for when writing my posts as well as reading the responses of others. I am sure that I am not the only one who gets frustrated when role-playing with a player who has lack of the following characteristics, so just use this as a guide to help improve your own writing!
Post Length - I am holding this site to a higher level of skill frankly because I believe everyone on this site possesses the capability to reach the required lengths that have been chosen for each rank. Creating a post length rule simply improves the overall look of the site from all of the other role-playing sites out there because one sentence posts make a site look unskilled and bad, but sites who can consistently crank out well written and adequate length posts generally look better to incoming players. This is not a strict enforcement and I will not measure the length of each post, but I do however know about how long a post should be and if you are consistently posting beneath the limit, a moderator may step in and ask you to spend more time in your responses. The following are the word limits for each rank of ninja:
Genin/D-Rank Rogue - 200 words Chunin/C-Rank Rogue - 250 words Special Jonin/B-Rank Rogue - 300 words Jonin/A-Rank Rogue - 350 words Kage/Sannin/S-Rank Rogue - 400 words
If you are having trouble meeting the requirements for your rank, try expanding the description of an attack your character has performed or add life to your character by giving him/her actions while he/she is speaking. This will also help other players understand and visualize your seen more clearly. Remember that this site is not just to post one action after another. Rather, posts by all players should be able to be linked together and form a beautifully descriptive story. Also you can elaborate by describing how your character perceives an event of another character if you are still having trouble meeting the post length requirements. However -do not- just copy and paste a piece a paragraph of another person's post, with the exception of a line of dialogue you want to respond to. This is plagiarism! Just describe how your character sees the event from where he/she is standing and remember not to add additional information about another character's actions if they have not stated it themselves.
(To give a sense of post length, the paragraph above is a total of 171 words. If you are able to write a post just slightly longer than this, you are good to go!)
Paragraphs - Now that you are able to type lengthy posts, you will need to divide them up. Posts that are all squashed together into a massive block are hard for other players to read and respond to what you have acted. Thus a good sense of splitting your work into paragraphs is needed to effectively role-play with others. There is no set rule of where and when you have to begin a new paragraph but there are three approaches to dividing a block of sentences evenly into smaller sections. The first method you can use is to simply start a new paragraph when the subject of your post changes. For instance you can describe the surrounding area in a first section and then in a second paragraph you can begin to describe the technique your character is performing.
Another method of dividing up a post is to just begin a new paragraph once the current one has become too long. Take note of how I smoothly transitioned into a new section from the first one. It did not end abruptly, but now my entire information will not be a massive paragraph that is hard to read or that may deter readers from completely reading the entire post. Sometimes a particularly detailed description simply does not give any good position to begin a new paragraph. In this case, just pick a good stopping sentence and begin the next in a separate paragraph. The final method is to ignore divisions until the entire post is typed out and then dividing it up into equally spaced paragraphs depending on the overall length. This should be easy to implement, but if you are careless to divide your posts, a moderator may ask you to edit and divide it for easier reading.
Spelling and Grammar - Now we have a good sized post that is divided up equally into paragraphs. Our post is now easy to read, correct? Well possibly not. There is nothing that frustrates a player more than typing out a descriptive masterpiece which is responded to by a poorly worded post with way too many spelling mistakes. Not only will it be difficult to interpret, but it is a major letdown because it shows that a player does not take the same care to respond to a post which someone has created for the enjoyment of others. However correcting spelling errors is actually quite easy; before clicking on the send button, copy and paste your post into a word document. This will highlight any errors you may have accidentally typed and will prepare your post to be viewed by others. A good strategy is to type your post in a word document to begin with to ensure that your post will not be lost in the case where the window is accidentally closed out during mid-post.
Correcting the grammar portion is slightly harder because a word document does not highlight most grammar mistakes. Really the only method you can use is to reread your post and correct any sentences that may seem worded incorrectly. If you are not the best at grammar, just do the best you can and at the very least make sure there are no forgotten words or have not mistakenly typed a word when you really meant to type another. Moderators understand that absolutely no post will be perfect and spelling and grammar mistakes will always exist, but please try to eliminate as many as possible without spending a whole lot of time proofing your posts. Few errors will rarely catch the attention of a moderator, however if your posts contain many errors and is difficult to read because of it, they will warn you about it. If it happens frequently after the warning, a moderator may take further measures and restrict you from posting for twenty-four hours. I have double read these tips and edited out as many errors as I could so my readers would be able to accurately understand my information; you should do so also.
Administrators - Please remember that admins will try to be online as much as possible, but we also have lives outside of the site so we will not be online all the time. If there is no admin online at the time you submit material, please be patient; an admin will get to it as soon as they log on. Site members are also expected to listen to ALL administrators and moderators, both on the chat and on the site. Failure to do so will be reported to me and may result in you becoming banned.
God-Modding - Ah yes, the dreaded god-modding. We've all heard it mentioned before and I have even alluded to it above, but I am about to tell you exactly what is considered god-modding. In simple terms it is the act of controlling another person's character or writing they have performed an action when in fact that person had not specifically written they performed that action. When battling, god-modding can also have an additional meaning but I will explain this in another set of rules. This means that something as simple as writing that a character punches with his left hand, when the person had written they had punched but did not specify which hand, would be considered god-modding. The only way to truly remove god-modding from your posts is with experience, which you will eventually gain, but just follow the basic rule of responding to -only- what others write in their posts and don't scrutinize too much. However do not fear because minor offenses will only pass off without a warning, however intentional god-modding will receive a serious punishment, most likely a very long and enduring ban.
This is all you need to know about enhancing your posts in a nutshell. Remember that practice makes perfect and have fun!~ |
